Communications


In the world of universities and research, good communication infrastructure is needed to guarantee the development of e-Science and the information society in Catalonia. Therefore, in 1993, CESCA set up a high-performance network, the Anella Científica. The aim at the time was to provide users with access to supercomputing resources. The target is now to provide access to all resources available on the internet, using a high-quality broadband service.
In addition to enabling internet access, the Anella Científica also offers a series of value-added services: remote access, to facilitate teleworking; authentication, to facilitate mobility; security, to be able to react in a coordinate way to any incidents (infections, attacks, junk mail, etc.); digital certification, to be able to carry out more secure electronic transactions; voice-over-IP, to reduce the cost of national calls to Barcelona, etc.
The Anella is connected to the state research network RedIRIS, managed by Red.es, through the node hosted by CESCA. RedIRIS can be used to access the networks of other autonomous communities (RICA in Andalusia, RECETGA in Galicia, i2BASK in the Basque Country, etc.), the pan-European network Géant2, and through this, the most advanced international research networks, including the American Internet2, the Canadian CA*net-4 and the Asian TEIN2.
In 1999, the Punt Neutre d'Internet a Catalunya (CATNIX) was set up to aid traffic exchange between different internet providers and to ensure that university information could be accessed by all citizens. CATNIX also offers various added-value services, such as multicasting, IPv6, the F-root nameserver, the bogon route server, etc.
In addition to managing the Anella and CATNIX, the Communications Department administrates the entire basic infrastructure of the Centre, such as mail servers, distribution lists, the local network, technical installations, etc. In collaboration with the Systems Department, it also provides the hosting service (SAHS) and the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week maintenance service (S24x7).
