RedIRIS is the academic and
scientific network promoted by the National Plan for R&D
and managed by Red.es which connects the main universities
and scientific centres in Spain. Since its beginning, the
Anella Científica has provided Internet access to
scientific institutions located in Catalonia through
RedIRIS.
When RedIRIS network was created, in 1991, it had a star topology, but since 2003 it has a mesh structure that optimizes load distribution and offers a better redundancy. RedIRIS has 18 nodes, one in each autonomous comunity except in the Canary Islands, where there are two, and since 1996 CESCA hosts the RedIRIS node in Catalonia. This node is directly linked to the ones in Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Zaragoza.
In July 2006, a tender for the deployment of a new infrastructure, which makes the establishment of 10 Gbps connections possible, was awarded.
RedIRIS offers information about the RedIRIS10 deployment state in their web.
Regarding the connectivity with the rest of the European academic networks, RedIRIS is connected to the pan-European research network, Géant, which is currently migrating to Géant2. Géant2 has three core links with RedIRIS: one between Madrid and Paris and one between Madrid and Milan, at 10 Gbps, and one with dark fiber between Madrid and Geneva.
