When CESCA was founded, its aim was to "manage a major complex of calculation systems". Therefore, supercomputing has always been an aspect of the services we provide for universities and research, first in the form of vector processors and now in superscalars with shared or distributed memory. Supercomputing is used to find new materials, progress in the treatment of diseases, reduce human impact on the environment or study our galaxies in greater depth. Other services have now been added to this area, including the following: drug design, data storage, information repositories, university portals and databases.

In 1996, the Servei de Disseny de Fàrmacs (SDF) was started up, in collaboration with pharmaceutical laboratories. The aim was to facilitate pharmacophore searches in databases of compounds of biological interest. The success of this service led to the incorporation of new tools derived from computational chemistry. These are used to predict, guide and create models of molecules, as well as their properties and interactions, thus enabling knowledge-based designs to be created.

The Servei d'Emmagatzematge de Dades (SED) began operation in 1999. The aim was to store researchers' calculation results in an automated tape library. Today, this service is also used for all areas of CESCA activities and to save internal data.

In 1999, as a result of the Pla Estratègic per a la Societat de la Informació Catalunya en Xarxa, in collaboration with the CBUC we started to design a collective repository to store, in digital format, the complete text of all of the doctoral theses presented at the universities of Catalonia. These theses were then to be disseminated worldwide, with free access online, whilst maintaining intellectual property rights for the authors.

This service, called Tesis Doctorals en Xarxa (TDX), was first offered in 2001. Three new repositories have been added to this initial one: the Dipòsit de la Recerca de Catalunya (RECERCAT), the Revistes Catalanes amb Accés Obert (RACO) and Patrimoni Digital de Catalunya (PADICAT). The first is a joint repository of digital documents that includes research literature from Catalan universities and research centres. The second repository provides open access to scientific, cultural and scholarly Catalan journals. The Biblioteca de Catalunya (BC) collaborates on this repository. The third, led by the BC, is a repository that gathers and stores all of Catalonia's cultural, scientific and general production in digital format, i.e. the aim is to file the contents of the Catalan web.

In 2007, the first ready-to-use repository was handed over to the Fundación Española de Ciencia y Tecnología (FECYT). This repository (RECYT) is used to edit and save Spanish science and technology journals of proven quality.

Since 2000, CESCA has also hosted portals and databases managed by universities, as well as others related to the Information Society. This service is provided for institutions in the consortium that are members of the Anella Científica. It ensures effective and secure access to content. A wide range of services are offered, including administration and academic information, past digital content, promotion of the use of ICT's, etc.
