CESCA supercomputing resources are available to
researchers of to the scientific community. Specifically,
with sponsorship of DURSI and FCRI, these services are
offered to any researcher from Catalan Universities or CSIC
institution in Catalonia; with sponsorship of MEC, to any
research group from the rest of the Country; and with joint
sponsorship of the European Commission mobility programs
and CEPBA , to any European researcher.
Our aim, as well as providing supercomputing services to
research groups, is to promote the creation of consortia
composed by research groups and companies, to jointly
collaborate in projects which increase both productivity
and product quality. CESCA is also willing to consider
requests of a different nature, in order to initiate new
collaborations.
CESCA can not offer its services to citizens of Cuba,
Rwanda, Iran and Iraq due to the current restrictions
imposed by USA Department of Commerce (www.access.gpo.gov/bis/ear/ear_data.html,
Part 746: Embargoes and Other Special
Controls).
The users of our facilities must comply with the
following:
|
1) |
Do not use the Center resources for commercial activities, excluding the case of industrial projects |
|
2) |
Do not share your user code and keep your password
secret from other researchers, in order to contribute
avoiding unauthorized access to our
resources. |
|
3) |
To aknowledge the utilization of our resources within
any publication being the result of their use, by
including the next paragraph in your
aknowledgements:
This research has been partly performed
using the CESCA resources.
|
|
4) |
To regularly update the Center's website with the research project description, by sending an extended abstract about your project (description, aims and computational model used) as well as bibliographic references published thanks to the use of our resources. |
|
5) |
To contribute to the circulation within the community of acquired benefits from using our technologies. |
Account Request
In order to apply for the use of the Center's resources, researchers must fill in the Academic or Industrial project application form. If adding a new user's code to an existing project was required, then New User Login Request form should be completed. If a project needs more extra computational hours than initially granted they should be requested through the Increase of computational hours application form. At the end of year, projects must be renewed.
Please carefully fill out the requested data, in order to avoid delays in the creation of user login. If no problem arises during the proceedings, you should get an electronic reply within a week after receiving your application.
Academic Project Register
In the Academic Project (
| 1) |
Project details: title, specific research field, project and computational method keywords and project start and end date. |
| 2) |
Details of the project manager: Full name, institution, department and position within it, and address. |
| 3) |
The project's requirements in terms of hardware and software. If this is your first project with us we recommend you to consult What do we have? section. This will assist you in available software as well as deciding which programming environment best suits you: ksh, csh, tcsh or bash ( ksh is the default). |
| 4) |
Data for each
registered user: full name, telephone number, e-mail
and two user name proposal (preferential and
alternative). If no suggestion was made, the one
appearing in e-mail address will be assigned, in the
case it was possible. |
| 5) |
The project manager
signature followed by a stamp from his/her
institution authenticating the form and accepting to
comply with the Center policies. |
| a) |
Title of the project in Catalan, Spanish and English. |
| b) |
Full name of the project manager and institutional data. |
| c) |
Research team (indicate institutional belonging if differing from that of the project manager). |
| d) |
Brief project description (around 5 lines, in Catalan and Spanish). |
| e) |
Extended abstract including description, aims to fulfill and computational methods (30-50 lines in English). |
The information above is compulsory for large and medium sized research groups (15.000 to 7.500 computational hours respectively), being optional for smaller research groups. The appropiate way to send it is by e-mail to projectes@cesca.es in order to be included in our website. If the project is continuing from an existing one you should ensure that its details have been updated (new aims, research team members, published works...). If this is not the case, we encourage you to send by e-mail the list of modifications to be done.
Once the application form is completed, it should be sent to your institution responsible to get authorization to use our resources. The institution responsible will ensure that we receive your application.
If only some testing of hardware or software want to be performed (limited to 100 computational hours), you do not need to include the attachment mentioned above nor your institution authorization, and you can directly send to us your application form.
Industrial Project Register
The Industrial Project (
If the project manager requests for a project not to be publicized, its development will be made private and therefore its details will not be recorded in our Center's database.
Once the application form is fulfilled and signed by your financial institution you can make it available to us.
New User Login Register
The New User Login (
A project manager can also request this service by e-mail to codis@cesca.es.
Note that in both cases, unless we are told otherwise, the new user will be integrated within the project user list.
Increase of computational hours
If an existent project needs more computational hours than the initially granted, they should be requested via the Increase of computational hours (
If the computational hours are to be met by the project institution the following procedure should take place:
| 1) |
The project manager
should complete the proceeding sections:
a) Project details.
b) Additional computational hours requested and its justification. |
| 2) |
Once the form is completed, the institution responsible must authorize the time increase. |
| 3) |
Once it has been approved, the institution responsible should send it to CESCA's director. |
| 4) |
Once this is done, the applicant will be notified. |
| 5) |
If the application was unsuccessful the institution responsible will notify the applicant. |
If the computational hours are to be granted via DGR (up to 4.000 CH for medium sized groups and unlimited for large sized groups), the project manager must also fill in the project details and computational hours requested, and directly send the form to CESCA's director. Once DGR determines the number of hours to concede, the resolution will be published on the website and applicants will be notified by e-mail.
Academic Project Renewal
At the end of year, vice-chancellors and institutional coordinator of CSIC start the selection of academic projects to be developed using our facilities. Existing projects can be renewed by filling in the Project Renewal (
We also require you to send by email to projectes@cesca.es the published works performed by using our facilities during the year. We should also be notified of any project updates to be included in the project description section of our website.
Mobility programs
European researchers also have the opportunity to use CESCA-BSC resources thanks to the sponsorship of the European Commission mobility programs. For more information and application visit www.hpc-europa.org.
Once you have been invited to join the program, the host must complete the Mobility Program Request application form in order to inform us of the services that will be needed.
Data Storage Service
All academic projects from CESCA can use our Data Storage Service of 20 GB, free of charge. More extra storage space should be available, if need be.
In order to request this service the project manager should send an e-mail to codis@cesca.es.
Inter center Computational Hours Exchange
If the facilities of the supercomputing center in Galicia (CESGA) were needed, it should be requested by completing the Inter center Computational Hours Exchange (
Please note that requests whose users need this facilities in order to develop, test or execute their own codes, or execute software not available within our Center facilities, will be given preference during the selection process.

Welcome
